British Woman, Unborn Baby Die in Nigeria as Family Seeks Repatriation

A 40-year-old British woman, Claire Chadwick, and her unborn baby girl have died in Nigeria following complications linked to sepsis, with her family raising funds to return their remains to the United Kingdom for burial.

Chadwick, who was originally from Cardiff, Wales, was 37 weeks pregnant when her baby reportedly died in the womb. She later developed sepsis and died from septic shock.

According to reports by the Daily Mail and WalesOnline, Chadwick had relocated to Nigeria to start a new life with her husband, Ibrahim. The couple regularly shared videos about their relationship, faith, and food challenges on TikTok and Instagram.

Following the tragedy, her sister, Shannon Chadwick, launched a GoFundMe campaign titled Bringing Claire Home on October 30, seeking £10,000 to cover repatriation and legal costs.

In the appeal, Shannon said the family’s priority was to bring Claire and her baby back to the UK so they could be buried close to their loved ones.

“More than anything, we want them both returned so they can be laid to rest with dignity, surrounded by the family who love them,” she wrote.

The fundraiser has since surpassed its £10,000 target, attracting more than 430 donations and raising £10,330 at the time of the latest available update.

Chadwick is survived by her 19-year-old son, who lives in Wales; her husband; and other relatives.

Her sister described her as a strong-minded woman who lived life on her own terms and left a lasting impression on those who knew her.

The family also acknowledged the support of REST, a charity that assists families dealing with sudden or tragic deaths abroad.
