Benue: Woman Disguised as Nurse Abducts Newborn

A newborn baby boy has been abducted from a healthcare facility in Gboko Local Government Area of Benue State after a woman allegedly posed as a nurse and took him from his mother.

The incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of Tuesday after the baby and his mother were moved to a ward for post-delivery care.

According to sources, the baby initially failed to cry after birth but later responded to medical attention and was said to be stable.

While in the ward, the woman allegedly approached the mother, introduced herself as a nurse, and claimed she needed to examine the baby. She then took the newborn and headed towards the labor room.

The baby’s grandmother reportedly followed her but was told to move away as there was no cause for concern. The woman allegedly disappeared with the baby shortly afterwards.

Staff at the facility later denied knowing the woman or sending anyone to collect the newborn, raising concerns that she had impersonated a nurse.

The incident reportedly caused panic at the facility, prompting the deployment of security personnel to maintain order.

Confirming the incident on Wednesday night, Benue State Police spokesperson, DSP Peter Aondongu, said the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Makurdi for further investigation.

Aondongu said the incident occurred at a healthcare center in Gboko but was moved to Makurdi because of the attention it had attracted.

He added that the police would provide further information as the investigation progresses.
