The Bayelsa State Police Command has charged eight suspects to court over the disappearance of one-year, 10-month-old Amarachi Blessing Ogbonna, who went missing from a church in the state on June 21, 2026.
The child reportedly disappeared during a church service after she was left at the children’s section. Her whereabouts could not be accounted for after the service.
The case has sparked criticism on social media, with some users accusing the police of failing to act promptly.
However, the police said the claims were inaccurate, stating that its Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) took over the investigation from the Ekeki Division after the case was reported.
According to Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Musa Mohammed, the investigation led to the identification and arrest of suspects allegedly linked to the disappearance.
He said eight suspects have been charged before the High Court of Bayelsa State, Yenagoa Judicial Division, under Charge No. BYHC/YHC/CR./81/2026, and are awaiting arraignment. Others whose involvement could not be established were released on bail.
The command attributed the delay in arraignment to the court vacation, saying proceedings resumed this week.
Police said the investigation remains ongoing, with efforts focused on locating Amarachi and reuniting her with her family. The command also urged the public to avoid relying on unverified information circulating on social media.
The eight suspects have not been convicted, and the allegations against them remain subject to determination by the court.
