Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has cautioned the Federal Government against any harm to opposition leaders, stressing that the safety of political opponents is a key test of Nigeria’s democracy.
In a statement issued by his media aide, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku said “nothing must happen” to Labour Party figure Peter Obi and called for the immediate release of former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai. He argued that protecting opposition voices is a constitutional responsibility and essential to maintaining democratic stability.
Atiku also criticized the Presidency’s response to recent remarks by Obi, saying it relied on personal attacks rather than measured engagement. He warned that such reactions could heighten political tension and undermine public confidence.
“Democratic leadership demands composure, not contempt,” he said, urging the government to respond to criticism with facts and responsibility.
The former presidential candidate further called on authorities to prioritize pressing national challenges, including insecurity, economic hardship, and widespread kidnappings. He urged the government to focus on rescuing abducted citizens and restoring public safety instead of engaging in political disputes.
Atiku maintained that justice must be fair and impartial, expressing concern over El-Rufai’s continued detention. He emphasized that all citizens are entitled to due process and equal protection under the law.
He concluded by urging the government to strengthen transparency and accountability, noting that public trust is built through openness and effective governance, not political confrontation.
