A senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State, Dr. Matthew Uwuigbe, has been found dead in a hotel room in the Mosco area of the town.
The incident occurred on October 5, 2026, after Uwuigbe reportedly checked into the hotel with a 21-year-old woman identified as Angela Defa Jacob.
According to the Edo State Police Command spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, the lecturer later asked the woman to buy water. When she returned, she found him lying dead in the room.
The police have arrested the woman, the hotel owner, and the manager as investigations continue to establish the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death.
Uwuigbe’s remains have been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary.
The university’s Public Relations Officer, Mike Aladenika, confirmed that Uwuigbe was a member of the academic staff but said the incident occurred outside the institution and was unrelated to university activities.
He also clarified that the woman involved was not a student of the university.
The police have not disclosed the cause of death.
