The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has announced plans to deploy artificial intelligence (AI) and digital tracking tools to combat fake news, online scams, and misleading information.

The Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, disclosed this at the 2026 Nigerian Council of the Institute of Public Relations (NECCIPR) Roundtable in Lagos.
Represented by the service’s National Public Relations Officer, Deputy Comptroller Abdullahi Maiwada, Adeniyi said the initiative would help monitor online information, verify claims, and counter false narratives capable of damaging the service’s reputation.
He added that the Customs Service would collaborate with relevant agencies to identify and apprehend individuals responsible for spreading misleading information.
Adeniyi said AI was already supporting the service’s operations, particularly in assessing imported goods, classifying them according to risk levels and determining appropriate interventions.
He also noted that the technology could analyze public sentiment and help the service understand how Nigerians perceive its activities.
The roundtable, held under the theme, “Algorithm Influence and Public Relations,” examined the growing impact of artificial intelligence and digital technologies on public communication.
