Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has said he will withdraw from the 2027 election if allegations against him by former ally Kenneth Okonkwo are proven true.
Obi made the statement during an interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, amid an ongoing defamation dispute between both men.
The former Anambra State governor has filed a multi-billion naira lawsuit against Okonkwo, accusing him of making false and damaging claims.
In response to criticism that the suit is an attempt to silence dissent, Obi said the legal action is intended to compel Okonkwo to substantiate his allegations.
“I want Kenneth Okonkwo to bring out all the hidden things he claims to have on me. If I am found unfit after that, I will stop running,” Obi said.
Okonkwo, now a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and spokesperson for its presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, has recently made several critical remarks about Obi and his political standing ahead of the 2027 elections.
The dispute highlights growing tensions between both men, who were previously political allies, as Nigeria’s opposition landscape continues to shift ahead of the next general election.
