At least 24 people have been killed and several others injured after gunmen attacked Bin-Per community in Kombun District of Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The attack reportedly occurred overnight between Monday and Tuesday, with residents saying the gunmen moved from house to house, attacking people as they slept.
A resident, Daniel Musa, said more than 24 deaths had been confirmed, while several others were injured and some residents remained missing.
The Mwaghavul Youth Movement confirmed the attack, saying 24 people were killed, while homes were reportedly burnt and farmlands destroyed. The group described the incident as a major blow to the predominantly farming community and called for stronger security measures.
The victims were given a mass burial on Tuesday as residents mourned the loss of their relatives.
Women from the community also staged a peaceful protest, marching with leaves and demanding urgent government action to protect residents. One of the protesters, Ladi Joshua, said the killings had devastated families who lost husbands, children, and other relatives.
Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang condemned the attack and directed security agencies to intensify surveillance and patrols in Bin-Per and other vulnerable communities in Mangu. Residents were also urged to provide security agencies with information that could help identify and apprehend the attackers.
The attack has renewed concerns over persistent violence in Plateau State, where several communities have suffered deadly attacks in recent months. A recent analysis reported an increase in casualties from attacks across parts of the state during the second quarter of 2026.
The United States has also continued to focus on religiously motivated violence and insecurity in Nigeria. Nigeria was redesignated a Country of Particular Concern by the Trump administration in October 2025, while US Congressman Riley Moore has continued to push for stronger action over attacks on Christian communities.
Security agencies had yet to publicly announce arrests or identify those responsible for the Bin-Per attack as of the latest reports.
