Former President Goodluck Jonathan has urged Nigerian politicians to prioritize national interest over party loyalty, warning that ethnic, religious and regional divisions continue to hinder the country’s development.

Jonathan spoke on Tuesday at the fifth National Conference of the Forum of Former Deputy Governors of Nigeria in Abuja. He was represented by Bala Ngilari, a former deputy governor of Adamawa State.
He said Nigeria must remain bigger than any political party, individual or sectional interest, urging politicians to embrace competence, integrity, inclusion and national unity.
“One major obstacle to Nigeria’s political development is division along ethnic, religious and regional lines,” he said, calling on political leaders to rise above such differences.
Jonathan also urged former deputy governors to use their experience to promote unity and mentor younger politicians.
Drawing from his experience as deputy governor and governor of Bayelsa State, vice-president and president, he said effective governance requires patience, consultation and teamwork.
He added that governance should focus on building strong institutions and serving the people rather than promoting individual interests.
