Xenophobia Crisis Costs SA Entertainers Millions as Tours Get Cancelled

The government of South Africa has expressed concern over the growing economic impact of xenophobia-related perceptions, warning that the fallout is affecting its citizens and businesses operating across the African continent.

Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Mmamoloko Kubayi, said several South African entertainers have lost performance opportunities, while companies abroad are encountering increasing difficulties linked to the controversy.

Speaking during an interview with South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), Kubayi maintained that government actions were targeted at addressing illegal immigration and should not be misconstrued as hostility toward foreign nationals.

She noted that authorities are engaging affected businesses and offering consular support to mitigate the situation.

According to the minister, the entertainment sector has been particularly impacted, with numerous artistes experiencing cancellations of scheduled shows across Africa.

Kubayi revealed that one performer reported losing all bookings outside South Africa, resulting in significant financial losses.

She urged African countries to distinguish between undocumented migrants and legally residing individuals, calling for the protection of lawful residents.

The development follows renewed scrutiny of South Africa amid reports of anti-immigrant incidents, which have prompted countries including Nigeria, Ghana, and Malawi to evacuate some of their nationals.
