The 39-year-old forward took his tally to seven goals after scoring in Argentina’s 3–2 win over Cape Verde in the Round of 32, maintaining a narrow lead in the Golden Boot race.
France’s Kylian Mbappé follows closely with six goals, while Norway’s Erling Haaland and England’s Harry Kane have each scored five.
Messi will look to extend his lead when Argentina face Egypt in their Round of 16 clash on Tuesday.
The knockout stage begins on Saturday, with co-hosts Canada set to take on Morocco.
