The United States Mission in Nigeria has reiterated that all U.S. citizens, including dual nationals, must use a valid American passport when entering or leaving the United States.
In a statement posted on Sunday, the mission said the rule applies to adults and children who hold citizenship in both the U.S. and another country.
It also clarified that dual citizens are not allowed to apply for travel authorization using a foreign passport. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security, it noted, routinely denies or cancels Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) applications submitted by dual nationals using non-U.S. passports.
The mission advised U.S. citizens living abroad, including those in Nigeria, to ensure their passports are valid before traveling.
It added that travelers should be mindful that many countries require passports to have at least six months’ validity before entry.
