South African Grammy-winning singer Tyla has removed Lagos from the schedule of her APOP World Tour following backlash from Nigerians over renewed xenophobic attacks in South Africa.
A review of the singer’s official tour website on Friday confirmed that the Lagos concert, earlier slated for December 22, is no longer listed. Other tour dates across Europe, North America, and South Africa remain unchanged.
Tyla had announced the tour earlier in the week, with Lagos as the only Nigerian stop before concluding in Cape Town on January 4 and Johannesburg on January 9. The announcement sparked widespread reactions online, with some Nigerians calling for a boycott in protest against attacks on Nigerians living in South Africa.
The situation escalated after activist Martins Otse, known as VeryDarkMan, threatened to mobilize supporters to disrupt the concert if it went ahead. He said the move was in solidarity with victims of xenophobic violence.
However, former African Action Congress presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore criticized the boycott calls, arguing that the singer should not be held responsible for political issues.
The decision to remove Lagos comes amid fresh concerns over the safety of Nigerians in South Africa, including reports of recent attacks and deaths.
As of press time, neither Tyla nor her management has provided an official reason for the change, and concert organizers have yet to confirm whether the Lagos show has been cancelled or postponed.
