TUC Rejects N70,000 Wage Award, Demands N300,000 Minimum Salary

The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has rejected the Federal Government’s proposed N70,000 monthly wage award for federal workers, insisting that the lowest-paid worker should earn N300,000.

The union made its position known in a statement signed by its President-General, Festus Osifo, and Secretary, Nuhu Toro, following discussions between the Federal Government and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

The TUC argued that workers need a sustainable salary increase rather than temporary financial support, particularly amid rising costs of food, transportation, healthcare and other essentials.

It also criticized the incomplete implementation of the N40,000 wage award introduced in October 2023, claiming that some workers received payments for only one or two months, while others received nothing.

The union questioned the government’s proposal for another wage award while previous commitments remained unfulfilled.

“Our position is unequivocal: workers are not asking for favours; they are demanding social and economic justice that protects their dignity and livelihoods,” the statement said.

The TUC also demanded the implementation of agreements with the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) and called on federal, state and local governments to ensure timely payment of salaries and pensions, protect jobs and address the rising cost of living.

It urged the government to strengthen the productive sector, create decent employment opportunities and take practical measures to reduce the cost of essential goods and services.
