US President Donald Trump has promised a $5,000 payment to every adult American if Republicans retain control of both chambers of Congress in the November midterm elections.
Trump made the pledge on Wednesday at the Republican Party’s first midterm convention in Dallas, Texas, calling the proposed payment a “Trump dividend.”
“If the Republicans win the House of Representatives and the United States Senate, both of them… I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000,” he said.
Trump added that the money would have to be spent in the United States.
However, he gave no details on how the proposed payments would be funded or implemented. Reuters estimates that paying about 270 million American adults would cost roughly $1.35 trillion.
The Associated Press reported that the proposal would likely require congressional approval, while Vice President JD Vance later suggested that wealthy Americans could be excluded from receiving the payment.
The proposal comes ahead of the November 3 midterm elections, in which Republicans are seeking to retain control of the House and Senate. Trump urged voters to treat the election as if he were personally on the ballot.
