US President Donald Trump has approved the execution by firing squad of former US Army Major Nidal Malik Hasan, who was convicted of killing 13 people in the 2009 Fort Hood shooting in Texas.

Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell announced the decision on Monday, saying Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth recommended the firing squad and Trump approved it. The Secretary of the Army will determine the date and location of the execution.
Hasan, an Army psychiatrist at the time, opened fire at Fort Hood on November 5, 2009, killing 13 people and wounding 32 others.
A military jury convicted him in 2013 on 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder. He was sentenced to death after the trial.
No execution date has been announced.
If carried out, Hasan’s execution would be the first by the US military since 1961, when Army Pvt. John A. Bennett was hanged at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. It would also be the first US military execution by firing squad since 1945.
