The Nigerian military has intensified operations across the Lake Chad region following reports of internal clashes within the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), which have weakened the group’s fighting capacity.
Security sources said the renewed offensive is aimed at targeting fleeing fighters and preventing them from regrouping or launching fresh attacks. The operation includes increased patrols, precision strikes, and enhanced intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance activities to track insurgent movements.
A senior military source described the situation as a strategic opportunity, noting that troops are taking advantage of the group’s internal divisions to disrupt its operations further.
However, security officials warned that the infighting could create new risks, as displaced fighters may splinter into smaller cells, seek retaliation, or move into new areas, posing threats to civilians and security forces.
Troops have been placed on high alert across key locations in the Lake Chad basin, with coordinated land and air operations ongoing. The military says it will sustain pressure to ensure the crisis within ISWAP does not escalate into a broader security threat in Nigeria’s North-East.
