The wife of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has called on President Bola Tinubu to ensure her husband receives fair treatment as he faces ongoing prosecution.
Speaking during a television interview on Wednesday, Asiya El-Rufai said the family was not asking the President to interfere in the judicial process but to ensure that his constitutional rights are upheld.
She said the former governor should be granted access to medical care, legal representation, family visits, and bail on reasonable terms.
Asiya also referenced the support she and her husband gave Tinubu during the 2023 presidential campaign, saying it was reasonable to expect “basic courtesy” from the administration.
“The President may not have the power to stop anything, but he has the power to tell agencies to do the right thing,” she said.
She questioned why El-Rufai had been denied bail despite previously complying with court conditions and dismissed claims that he posed a flight risk.
The appeal comes amid concerns raised by the family over his health and detention conditions, including limited access to his personal physician.
El-Rufai is currently facing trial over allegations brought by anti-graft authorities, with proceedings ongoing in court.
