President Bola Tinubu has asked the African Union to take collective action over recurring xenophobic and Afrophobic attacks against Africans and other foreign nationals in South Africa.
Tinubu made the call through Vice President Kashim Shettima at the 21st Extraordinary Session of the African Union Assembly in Luanda, Angola, on Sunday.
He urged the AU to place the issue on the agenda of its 40th Ordinary Session scheduled for January 2027.
The President said while Nigeria recognized South Africa’s right to enforce its immigration laws, attacks on foreign nationals undermined African unity, solidarity, and peaceful coexistence.
Tinubu also called for stronger efforts to combat xenophobia through dialogue, preventive diplomacy, and collective action.
The summit, held in Luanda, focused on strengthening Africa’s conflict prevention and resolution mechanisms. Tinubu backed the proposed Luanda Action Plan, stressing that preventing conflicts was more effective and sustainable than managing them after they erupt.
He also called for stronger African ownership of peace and security efforts, warning against excessive reliance on foreign military forces and other external actors.
