Tinubu Names Four INEC Commissioners, Two RECs

President Bola Tinubu has nominated four national commissioners and two Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) to fill vacancies at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The nominations were announced in a statement on Friday by Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy. The Senate is expected to screen the nominees before confirming their appointments.

The national commissioner nominees are Professor Mustapha Aliu for the North-West, Bashir Muhammed Umar for the North-Central and Oluwatoyin Babalola for the South-West. Tinubu also reappointed Bala Bila, who represents the North-East.

Aliu will replace Professor Abdullahi Zuru, Umar will replace Professor Muhammad Adamu, while Babalola, currently the REC in Osun State, will replace Professor Cornelius Ajayi.

The two REC nominees are Samuel Akinjide Akinleye for Ekiti State and Zahradden Basiru Sanusi for Jigawa State, replacing Professor Saidu Ahmed Babura.

Tinubu urged the Senate to expedite the confirmation process ahead of the forthcoming general elections.
