President Bola Tinubu has extended his working vacation by a few days and is now expected to return to Nigeria at the weekend, the Presidency said on Monday.
Tinubu left Nigeria on August 30 for London to begin his annual leave, described by the Presidency as a working vacation. He later travelled to Paris, France, where he met French President Emmanuel Macron and businessman Vincent Bolloré.
According to presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu has continued to direct government affairs while away. He recently ordered an independent investigation into the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners who died while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Minna, Niger State.
Vice President Kashim Shettima had represented Tinubu at several official engagements but travelled to New York on September 20 to represent Nigeria at the 81st United Nations General Assembly.
With Shettima at the UNGA, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, will continue to represent the President at official functions.
The Presidency also dismissed criticism over Tinubu’s absence from the UNGA, saying Shettima would deliver Nigeria’s national statement at the gathering.
Tinubu is expected back in Nigeria at the weekend after extending his stay in Europe.
