The Taraba State Government has introduced three executive orders aimed at tackling drug abuse, political thuggery, and illegal exploitation of natural resources.
Governor Agbu Kefas signed the orders over the weekend, describing them as part of efforts to strengthen law enforcement, improve public safety, and protect communities across the state.
One of the directives targets the rising rate of drug abuse by reinforcing existing laws and giving authorities stronger backing to curb the use of illicit substances. The government said the move follows growing concerns over the link between substance abuse, crime, and social instability, particularly among young people.
The order also promotes public awareness campaigns, rehabilitation programs, and youth development initiatives, while empowering agencies to monitor and prosecute drug-related offences.
A second order bans political thuggery ahead of future elections. It prohibits the recruitment, funding, or use of thugs by individuals or political groups, a step the government says is necessary to prevent violence, voter intimidation, and destruction of property.
The third directive focuses on environmental protection by cracking down on illegal mining, logging, and other unauthorized activities. Authorities say these operations have damaged farmlands, polluted water sources, and threatened the livelihoods of local communities.
Governor Kefas noted that the order will strengthen measures against illegal resource exploitation while promoting environmental sustainability and protecting host communities.
The state government urged citizens, traditional and religious leaders, civil society groups, and security agencies to support the implementation of the new measures.
