Supporters of former Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, reportedly stopped security operatives from arresting him at the Abuja airport on Thursday.
According to several reports, officials of the Department of State Security (DSS) tried to take El-Rufai into custody shortly after he arrived at the airport.
However, the former governor allegedly resisted the move, and his supporters quickly stepped in. They surrounded him and escorted him out of the airport terminal, preventing the security officials from carrying out the arrest.
Videos shared on social media show his supporters chanting and praising him as they led him away. In one clip, some of them can be heard saying, “He is our leader, nothing will happen,” as they ensured he left the scene safely.
The incident comes days after El-Rufai hinted that he might soon be arrested. In a recent interview, he claimed that some of his former associates in Kaduna had already been detained by security agencies. He said this made him believe he could be the next person to be picked up.
