Former Portugal head coach Fernando Santos has praised Real Madrid for signing Bernardo Silva, describing the midfielder as “a phenomenon in every aspect.”

Silva joined Madrid on a free transfer last month after a successful nine-year spell at Manchester City. The 31-year-old made 460 appearances for City, scoring 76 goals and winning 19 trophies, including six Premier League titles.
He recently featured for Portugal national team at the 2026 World Cup, where they were eliminated in the Round of 16 after a 1-0 loss to eventual champions Spain national team.
Santos, who coached Portugal from 2014 to 2022, said Silva remains at the peak of his career and dismissed suggestions of decline.
“He has immense quality and understands the game like very few players,” Santos said. “Real Madrid has signed a player who will make a significant impact.”
Silva has signed a two-year deal at the Santiago Bernabéu and is expected to strengthen Madrid’s midfield ahead of the new season.
