South Africa international and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams has died at the age of 25, just weeks after featuring at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The cause of death has not been confirmed.
Minister of Sport, Arts, and Culture Gayton McKenzie announced Adams’ death on Saturday, describing it as a major loss to South African football. He said the country was mourning alongside the player’s family, teammates, and supporters.
Police have launched an investigation after the body of a 25-year-old man was found at a residence in Schotschekloof, Cape Town, on Saturday morning. Authorities have not officially confirmed further details.
McKenzie urged the public and media to avoid speculation while investigations continue, calling for privacy and compassion for the family and Adams’ club.
Adams recently represented South Africa at the 2026 World Cup, playing in all three group-stage matches as Bafana Bafana advanced to the knockout stage for the first time. They were later eliminated by Canada in the round of 32.
He drew attention during the tournament after starting in a 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic just hours after learning of his grandmother’s death.
The South African Football Players Union described his passing as an immeasurable loss.
Adams made his senior debut in 2022 and was part of the squad that reached the semi-finals of the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations. He began his professional career at Stellenbosch FC before joining Mamelodi Sundowns in 2025, where he won the league title and CAF Champions League.
