The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called on the Senate to reject the nomination of Professor Mustapha Aliu as a commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), alleging that he is a maternal brother of Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu.

The party’s spokesperson, Abdullahi Bolaji, raised the concern in a statement posted on his official X handle on Sunday, arguing that the alleged family relationship could undermine public confidence in the electoral process.
The ADC said the governor’s reported bid for re-election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) made the allegation particularly concerning, stressing that electoral officials must be both impartial and seen to be impartial.
The party urged the Senate to scrutinise the nomination thoroughly, citing Section 156(1)(a) of the 1999 Constitution, which disqualifies members of political parties from appointment as INEC members.
It called on lawmakers to reject the nomination over concerns about impartiality.
