Reports have emerged that Ibn Mohammed bin Shekau, son of late Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau, has surfaced within the ranks of the insurgent group, sparking fresh security concerns.
The development was disclosed by counter-terrorism analyst Zagazola Makama in a post on X, where he warned of a possible continuation of Shekau’s extremist ideology and network.
According to Makama, Ibn Mohammed is believed to be following in his father’s footsteps. Abubakar Shekau led Boko Haram after the death of its founder, Mohammed Yusuf, and oversaw some of the group’s most violent campaigns across Nigeria’s North-East and parts of the Lake Chad region.
During his leadership, Boko Haram carried out widespread attacks on civilians, security forces, and government institutions, gaining notoriety for brutal tactics and propaganda videos.
Shekau died in 2021 after a clash with fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), a development that reshaped the dynamics of insurgency in the region.
Security analysts say the reported emergence of his son could signal attempts to revive elements of Shekau’s influence within the group.
