Senate Okays ₦50m Compensation for Families of Oyo Rescue Victims

Nigeria’s Senate has approved a ₦50 million donation for the families of five individuals who died during the rescue of abducted schoolchildren in Oyo State.

The decision, announced during Wednesday’s plenary, followed a motion by Senate President Godswill Akpabio. Lawmakers unanimously agreed that each of the five affected families will receive ₦10 million.

The victims include three security personnel, Lieutenant F. A. Isaac, Private Silas Musa, and Sergeant Abena John Jerome, as well as two teachers, Deacon John Olaleye and Michael Oyedokun, who died while in captivity.

The rescue operation, which freed the kidnapped pupils and their teachers after 56 days, was earlier commended by the Senate. Akpabio praised the efforts of security agencies and Bola Tinubu for securing the release of the victims.

He noted that while the mission was successful, it came at a heavy cost.

The Senate directed its leadership to present the funds to the bereaved families, describing the gesture as a token of appreciation for the sacrifices made.
