Resident Doctors at FMC Abeokuta Begin Three-Day Warning Strike Over Security Breach

Medical residents at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Idi-Aba in Abeokuta, Ogun State, have commenced a three-day warning strike following a burglary incident at their residential quarters.

The industrial action was triggered by a recent break-in at the House Officers’ Quarters, during which personal belongings such as mobile phones, laptops, cash, and other valuables were reportedly stolen.

In a communiqué issued after an emergency meeting, the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) expressed serious concern over recurring security lapses within the hospital environment. The statement, signed by ARD President, Dr. Olanipekun Arise-Kola, and Assistant General Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Alawode, described the situation as a direct threat to members’ safety and welfare.

The doctors stated that the strike, scheduled to run from June 4 to June 6, 2026, was intended to compel hospital management to implement immediate and effective security measures.

Among their demands are the replacement of stolen items, installation of functional CCTV cameras, improved lighting around the premises, deployment of armed security personnel, and the establishment of a nearby police post. They also called for reinforced perimeter fencing and regular night patrols.

While reaffirming their willingness to maintain a cooperative relationship with hospital authorities, the doctors stressed that their safety must not be compromised.

In response, the hospital management expressed regret over the strike and appealed for calm. It stated that efforts were underway in collaboration with relevant agencies to address the security concerns and reduce disruptions to healthcare services.
