Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule has expressed support for a future all-Christian presidential ticket in Nigeria, saying he hopes such a pairing would emerge and win elections.
Speaking on Politics Today on Channels Television on Tuesday, Sule dismissed concerns that same-faith tickets promote religious exclusion. He argued that Nigeria should be open to testing a Christian-Christian ticket, just as Muslim-Muslim tickets have previously succeeded.
“I pray that one day Nigeria will have a Christian-Christian ticket, and it will win,” he said.
Sule referenced the 1993 presidential election, won by the late Moshood Abiola, as evidence that same-faith tickets can gain broad national support.
He also responded to criticism from opposition figures, including Rabiu Kwankwaso, noting that such concerns are typical in political rivalry.
On constitutional provisions, Sule said Nigeria’s laws emphasize inclusiveness and federal character based on regional and ethnic balance, not religion.
“There is no place where the constitution talks about religion in that context,” he stated.
The governor added that his choice of a Christian deputy in Nasarawa State was based on competence, not religious balancing, noting that political arrangements differ across states.
