The Adamawa State Police Command has stepped up security in Yola ahead of Vice President Kashim Shettima’s condolence visit to the family of the late former Governor of Gongola State, Bamanga Tukur.
The command deployed personnel from the Police Mobile Force, Counter-Terrorism Unit, Anti-Kidnapping Unit, Intelligence and Traffic units, alongside other operational assets, to strategic locations across the state capital.
In a statement on Thursday, the command’s spokesperson, SP Suleiman Nguroje, said the deployment was ordered by the Commissioner of Police, CP Kabir Hassan, to ensure a hitch-free visit.
The police also announced traffic diversions and stop-and-search operations in and around Yola.
Hassan urged residents to cooperate with security personnel and remain law-abiding, while warning suspected criminals and other troublemakers to stay away from venues linked to the visit.
He also called on residents to report suspicious persons or movements to the nearest police station or through the command’s emergency lines.
Bamanga Tukur, a former governor of the defunct Gongola State and former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, died in Abuja on September 12, 2026, aged 90. He was buried in Yola on September 13.
Shettima had earlier described Tukur’s death as a major loss to Nigeria and the African continent.
