Several people are feared dead, and about 30 others remain missing following an attack by suspected armed herdsmen in Ohimini Local Government Area of Benue State.
The assailants had earlier struck Ochobo community, killing two people. An attempted attack on nearby Agadagba was initially repelled by residents.
However, the gunmen returned on Saturday evening and launched a fresh assault, opening fire on the community. Multiple casualties were reported, while dozens fled into surrounding bushes.
A resident, who spoke from hiding, said the attackers arrived without warning and began shooting indiscriminately.
“Many people were killed, and others ran into the bush. As we speak, about 30 people are still missing. We don’t know if they are alive,” the source said.
Local authorities are yet to release an official casualty figure as search efforts continue.
