Chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dele Momodu, has declared his support for Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke’s re-election bid, despite belonging to a rival political party.
Momodu, in a statement on Tuesday, urged opposition parties to put aside personal and political interests and support Adeleke in the August 15, 2026 governorship election.
He said his decision was driven by what he described as the need for opposition parties to unite against the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Momodu said he joined the ADC as part of efforts to build a broad opposition coalition against the APC but expressed disappointment that the alliance did not develop as originally envisaged.
According to him, the situation in Osun requires opposition parties to adopt a practical strategy and rally behind Adeleke.
“It would be foolhardy not to see that with the manner APC has turned Osun State into a theater of war, the only sensible strategy is for all opposition parties to align immediately and back the Accord Party candidate, Governor Ademola Adeleke,” he said.
Momodu, a former presidential aspirant, said his endorsement was not based on friendship or family ties, describing Adeleke as a strong and popular governor.
He also praised Adeleke’s performance in infrastructure, health, education, agriculture, workers’ welfare, and other sectors.
Momodu warned that opposition parties must not create an opportunity for the APC to manipulate the outcome of the election.
“We should never supply the APC an easy alibi to rig the Osun gubernatorial election on August 15, 2026,” he said.
Adeleke, who is seeking a second term on the Accord Party platform, is facing APC candidate Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji and ADC candidate Najeem Salaam in the election. The Osun chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has adopted Adeleke for the poll.
