The planned Osun 2026 governorship debate has been cancelled, raising concerns among stakeholders and residents ahead of the August 15 election.
The debate, scheduled for Saturday, August 1, in Osogbo, was called off by organizers citing security risks and the unwillingness of some leading candidates to participate.
The event was jointly organized by Uniq FM, Rave FM, Diamond FM, and Fresh FM. In a statement, the organizers said the decision was unanimous, based on unfavorable security reports and the reluctance of key candidates to attend.
They noted that cancelling the debate was necessary to protect participants, journalists, and the public, stressing that safety remains a top priority.
The debate was expected to feature candidates from major parties, including the APC, ADC, Accord, and AAC, providing a platform for them to present their policies and engage voters ahead of the election.
Following the announcement, residents and civil society groups expressed disappointment, describing the development as a setback for democratic engagement.
Media executive Jare Tiamiyu criticized the absence of candidates, calling it a missed opportunity for accountability. Meanwhile, some residents argued that certain candidates were opting for alternative media platforms instead of the cancelled debate.
Others maintained that governorship hopefuls should be willing to present their plans directly to voters before seeking their mandate.
The cancellation comes less than two weeks before the governorship election, leaving voters with fewer opportunities to assess candidates’ agendas.
