Ogun Politics Rocked as Iyabo Obasanjo Walks Out of APC

Former senator representing Ogun Central, Iyabo Obasanjo, has formally withdrawn her membership from the All Progressives Congress, citing persistent exclusion and dissatisfaction with internal party processes in Ogun State.

In a resignation letter dated May 31 and addressed to the state chairman, she expressed concerns over what she described as a pattern of neglect and unfair treatment by party leaders.

The former lawmaker, who had shown interest in contesting the governorship under the party’s platform, criticised the process that led to the emergence of Senator Solomon Adeola as the party’s candidate. She argued that the consensus arrangement used did not follow established guidelines and lacked transparency.

She stated that although she had earlier agreed to support any aspirant selected through a consensus approach, she was neither consulted nor involved before the final decision was announced. She also alleged that some of her supporters were prevented from accessing the venue where the candidate was unveiled and were subjected to intimidation.

Despite her grievances, she noted that she accepted the outcome at the time in the interest of unity and publicly congratulated the eventual candidate.

She further disclosed that the candidate later met with her supporters and promised to address issues raised during the engagement, but no response had been received weeks after the meeting.

According to her, this development reinforced a recurring pattern of disregard, ultimately influencing her decision to leave the party.

While announcing her exit, she expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Ogun APC leadership and other stakeholders for their support during her time in the party.

Iyabo Obasanjo had only recently returned to active politics after years abroad, having previously served as Ogun State Commissioner for Health and later as a senator between 2007 and 2011.
