Seven students of Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Saapade, Ogun State, have regained their freedom after spending eight days in captivity following a kidnapping incident last week.
The students were abducted around 8 p.m. from a private hostel along Paraga Road in Ipara-Remo, near the institution, in an attack that reportedly lasted about 30 minutes and involved gunfire.
Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun confirmed on Thursday that the victims were rescued in the early hours of the day through a coordinated operation involving multiple security agencies. He said the operation combined ground forces with aerial surveillance after the deployment of a police helicopter.
According to the governor, all seven victims were rescued alive, although one sustained a gunshot injury and has since been stabilized after receiving medical attention.
The Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, said no ransom was paid for the students’ release. He added that five victims were rescued earlier, while the remaining two were freed after security operatives stormed the kidnappers’ hideout.
Ojajuni also confirmed the arrest of two suspects, noting that investigations are ongoing to apprehend other members of the gang.
The rescued students have received medical care and have been reunited with their families.
Authorities assured residents that efforts are ongoing to track down all those involved, reiterating that Ogun State will not tolerate criminal activities.
