The Benue State Police Command has arrested 46 people over the obstruction of the convoy of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, during his visit to the state.
The Commissioner of Police, Cletus Nwadiogbu, disclosed this on Wednesday in Makurdi, saying the arrests followed intelligence-led operations launched after the incident.
Obi’s convoy was blocked by a group of youths along the Makurdi-Gboko road on Tuesday while he was travelling to Yelwata to sympathize with victims of the 2025 attacks.
Nwadiogbu said the police, which had deployed three escort vehicles for Obi’s visit, avoided using force to prevent the situation from escalating into violence.
He said Obi was subsequently escorted safely back to the airport and left the state.
The commissioner said the arrests should not be mistaken for the conclusion of the investigation, adding that efforts were ongoing to apprehend others linked to the incident.
Nwadiogbu reaffirmed the command’s neutrality and warned that no individual or group had the right to unlawfully obstruct another person’s movement.
He assured that anyone found culpable would be dealt with according to the law.
