NSC Cancels NFF Election, Plans Football Reset

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has cancelled the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) elective congress scheduled for September 27 in Lafia, Nasarawa State, amid plans to reorganize the country’s football administration.

The move comes after a difficult run for Nigeria’s national teams, including the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the Super Falcons’ failure to secure a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The Falcons eventually lost 2–1 to South Africa in the playoff after their quarter-final defeat to Cameroon at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Reports indicate that the NSC is preparing to appoint a three-month normalisation committee to oversee Nigerian football and organise a fresh electoral process.

There are also reports that the NFF leadership has been given 24 hours to step aside. However, the claim has not been independently confirmed by the NSC and should be treated as unverified.

The proposed intervention has increased pressure on the Ibrahim Gusau-led NFF administration, which had been preparing for elections after the federation moved its elective congress to September 27. The NFF had earlier published an electoral roadmap for the poll.

The NFF has also established a fact-finding committee to investigate Nigeria’s recent poor performances, particularly the Super Falcons’ failure to reach the 2027 Women’s World Cup.

The planned reorganization is expected to focus on addressing concerns surrounding the administration of Nigerian football and creating a pathway to a new NFF leadership.
