NPFL sanctions Inter Lagos after officials’ assault

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has fined Inter Lagos N5.25 million and deducted three points and three goals from the club following incidents involving match officials after their Matchday 7 fixture against Katsina United.

The sanctions followed the 1-1 draw at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos, on Sunday, October 4.

According to the NPFL, Inter Lagos failed to provide adequate security, allowing unauthorised persons into restricted areas and leading to an attack on match officials as they moved from the dressing room to their vehicle.

The league also said the officials were held for more than an hour, while some club officials and supporters harassed and assaulted them. The first assistant referee sustained a facial injury and had personal belongings, including his mobile phone, damaged.

Inter Lagos were fined N2 million for the security breach, N1 million for holding the officials, and another N2 million for the assault. An additional N250,000 was awarded as compensation to the affected assistant referee.

The club will also lose three points and three goals for assaulting and injuring the first assistant referee.

Inter Lagos have 48 hours from the date of the notice to appeal the sanctions.
