Nigerians Burn N50bn on US Visas as Approval Odds Plunge

Nigerian applicants spent more than N50 billion on visa applications to the United States between 2023 and 2024, despite a noticeable drop in approval rates during the period.

Data compiled from official records shows that over 200,000 non-immigrant visas were issued within the two-year window, with each application attracting a standard fee of $185. The total expenditure reflects the significant demand for travel to the US, even as approvals declined.

Visa issuances fell by roughly 23 percent year-on-year, with fewer applications successfully processed in 2024 compared to the previous year. Business and tourism visas accounted for the bulk of approvals, while student and exchange programmes made up a smaller share.

Industry experts say Nigerians’ strong appetite for international travel continues to drive demand, noting that migration patterns are influenced by cultural and social factors beyond economic conditions.

However, stricter immigration policies introduced after the return of Donald Trump to office have made the process more challenging for applicants. These measures include tighter documentation requirements and reduced visa validity periods for certain categories.

Travel consultants also report that first-time applicants now face lower chances of success, with many completing the application process but failing to secure approval.

Despite the challenges, demand for overseas travel remains steady, although some Nigerians are increasingly exploring alternative destinations with higher approval prospects.
