Nigerian Senate Demands Prosecution of Terror Suspects

The Nigerian Senate has called on the Federal Government to stop the rehabilitation of so-called “repentant terrorists” and instead ensure swift prosecution of individuals involved in terrorism and related crimes.

The resolution was adopted during Tuesday’s plenary as lawmakers debated rising insecurity, including increasing attacks, abductions, and killings of serving and retired military personnel.

Senators stressed that those found culpable in terrorism and organized criminal activities must face the full weight of the law without delay. They argued that stricter enforcement, rather than leniency, is needed to deter crime and restore public confidence in the justice system.

The motion, sponsored by Abdulaziz Musa Yar’Adua, Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Nigerian Army, highlighted a growing pattern of targeted attacks against military personnel, describing it as a serious threat to national security.

Lawmakers also resolved to seek a meeting with President Bola Tinubu to formally present their concerns and convey public anxiety over persistent terrorism, banditry, kidnappings, and violent attacks nationwide.

The debate was partly triggered by the recent abduction and death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, who was kidnapped alongside his wife in Katsina State and later died in captivity.

The Senate also recalled previous incidents, including the abduction of retired Colonel Rabiu Garba Yandoto and his children in Zamfara State in 2023, as well as the killing of retired Major General Richard Chukwudi Duru in Imo State despite a ransom payment.

Lawmakers concluded that urgent and decisive action is needed to curb insecurity and reinforce the authority of the state.
