Nigeria has joined an African initiative aimed at strengthening leadership and public financial management among senior government officials.
The program, implemented by the African Capacity Building Foundation (ACBF) with support from the Gates Foundation, seeks to improve the capacity of officials responsible for implementing public financial management reforms.
Nigeria and Tanzania joined the program’s second cohort, while Ethiopia became the ninth country to participate in the third cohort.
Speaking during a webinar, ACBF Executive Secretary Mamadou Biteye said the program goes beyond technical training by providing leadership coaching, peer learning, personal development plans, technical assistance, and practical case studies.
He said more than 295 officials had participated across eight African countries since the program began in 2024.
Biteye said stronger leadership was essential to turning policies and technical reforms into lasting institutional change.
Also speaking, Gates Foundation Senior Program Officer Adil Abarabu said technical expertise alone was not enough to achieve sustainable public financial management reforms.
He said officials must also be equipped to manage resistance to change, work across institutions, and sustain reforms in challenging environments.
ACBF says its public financial management programs are designed to strengthen leadership, accountability, fiscal decision-making, and the effective management of public resources across Africa.
