President Bola Tinubu has ordered the immediate rescue of victims abducted during an attack on a mosque and surrounding communities in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.
The directive was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
Tinubu directed the Armed Forces, Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), and other security and intelligence agencies to intensify efforts to locate and rescue the abducted victims.
The attack occurred on Friday in the Dekara district, where gunmen invaded communities and abducted worshippers during Juma’at prayers at a mosque in Kpenya. The exact number of victims remains unclear, with authorities still verifying the figures.
Reports of a video showing hundreds of captives, with some estimates putting the number at about 600, have emerged, but the figure has not been independently verified.
Tinubu condemned the attack and described the perpetrators as “enemies of peace and humanity,” vowing that they would not escape justice.
He also expressed condolences to families of those reportedly killed and assured relatives of the abducted that the government would not stop until their loved ones are safely rescued.
The President further directed the Service Chiefs to provide regular updates on the rescue operation until all the victims are accounted for.
“Terror will not cow Nigeria,” Tinubu said, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to protecting communities and safeguarding lives.
