Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni has confirmed that Lionel Messi is expected to join the national team camp this weekend after Saturday’s friendly against Burkina Faso.
Messi is set to join the squad ahead of Argentina’s October 6 friendly against Benin at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires, which will serve as his farewell appearance for the national team.
“Messi is expected to join the camp on Sunday after the game against Burkina Faso,” Scaloni said, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The coach also indicated that Messi could feature against Burkina Faso if he wanted to, saying there would be “no problem” if the forward decided to play.
Messi, 39, announced his retirement from international football following Argentina’s 2026 World Cup final defeat by Spain. However, he accepted an invitation to return for one final appearance before ending his international career.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner has been included in Argentina’s squad for the upcoming friendlies against Bolivia, Burkina Faso and Benin, with the Benin clash designated as his farewell match.
