Mayorkun insists on DNA test before accepting child

Nigerian singer Adewale Mayowa Emmanuel, popularly known as Mayorkun, has said he will conduct a DNA test before accepting any child as his own.

The ‘Body Cheche’ crooner made the disclosure during a recent episode of the In My Opinion podcast, where he discussed marriage, trust, paternity, and relationships.

Mayorkun said he had already told his girlfriend that he intends to sign a prenuptial agreement before marriage and conduct a DNA test whenever she has a child.

According to him, his girlfriend was unhappy with the proposal, but he does not intend to change his position.

“I told my girlfriend we’d have to do a prenup and DNA test when she gives me a child, just to be sure. She got upset,” he said.

The singer also said he had considered conducting the test without informing his partner.

“I have thought of doing the DNA test without telling her. If it is my child, no issues. If not, everybody will hear about it,” he added.

Mayorkun’s comments have renewed public debate in Nigeria over paternity testing and trust in relationships.

The debate has intensified in recent years following reports from DNA testing centers. Smart DNA’s 2025/2026 data showed that 23.6 percent of paternity tests conducted during the reporting period produced negative results. However, the figure represents people who sought testing at the center and should not be interpreted as the prevalence of paternity fraud among Nigerian fathers generally.

The issue has also featured in high-profile cases, including a 2025 court-ordered DNA test involving the late singer Mohbad’s son, Liam.
