The Lagos State Government has arrested 12 suspected environmental offenders in a renewed crackdown on improper waste disposal across Lagos Island, Yaba, and Ikorodu.
The arrests were carried out by the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) in collaboration with the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) Corps as part of ongoing efforts to enforce sanitation laws and improve environmental standards.
According to LAWMA Managing Director Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, 11 suspects were apprehended during surveillance operations on Lagos Island and around the Yaba College of Technology. They were accused of offences including illegal waste dumping and scavenging.
In a separate incident in Ikorodu, KAI officials arrested a school security guard allegedly caught dumping refuse into a drainage channel.
All suspects are in custody and will face prosecution under Lagos environmental laws.
Gbadegesin praised a resident whose report led to the Ikorodu arrest, stressing the importance of public participation in maintaining a clean environment. He warned that illegal waste disposal contributes to flooding, environmental degradation, and health risks.
The government says enforcement operations will continue statewide, urging residents and businesses to comply with approved waste disposal practices and use designated waste collectors.
