Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has urged the international community to impose visa bans and economic sanctions on political actors allegedly linked to rising violence ahead of the August 15 governorship election.
Speaking in Osogbo on Monday during a meeting with a British Government delegation, Adeleke accused some political leaders of inciting attacks through their supporters, resulting in killings and shootings across parts of the state.
He commended security agencies for ongoing interventions but called for stronger action, including the arrest and prosecution of all suspects and their alleged sponsors, regardless of political affiliation.
“I have zero tolerance for violence. Even if my son is involved, he should be arrested,” Adeleke said, stressing the need for strict law enforcement.
The governor cited recent incidents, including the reported killing of an Accord Party member in Ijebu-Jesa, as evidence of escalating tensions. He argued that individuals promoting electoral violence should face consequences beyond Nigeria, including international sanctions.
“We seek visa bans against politicians sponsoring violence and similar sanctions for any security officials aiding such acts. Elections should not be about bloodshed,” he said.
In response, the British delegation, led by Senior Political Adviser Wale Adebajo, said the visit was part of the United Kingdom’s pre-election peacebuilding efforts in Osun State.
Adebajo reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to supporting peaceful, credible, and transparent elections, adding that the delegation would engage political parties and other stakeholders to promote calm before, during, and after the poll.
