Armed kidnappers have demanded an additional N300 million ransom for the release of Ahmed Mohammed, a commissioner with the Niger State Independent Electoral Commission (NSIEC), nine months after his abduction.
The demand comes despite reports that Mohammed’s family had already paid N40 million to secure his freedom.
Mohammed was kidnapped on September 29, 2025, along the Mokwa–Ibbi Road in Borgu Local Government Area while traveling to Minna on official duty ahead of the state’s local government elections.
A family member, who spoke anonymously, said the abductors recently re-established contact, asking if the family could meet the new demand.
“They call almost every day. They are now asking for N300 million, which we cannot afford,” the source said, appealing to the Niger State Government for intervention.
Reports indicate that ransom demands in the case have continued to rise over time, with previous payments failing to secure the victim’s release.
The incident highlights Nigeria’s ongoing kidnapping crisis, particularly in northern regions where abductions for ransom remain frequent.
