Kaduna Assembly Approves State Police Bill

The Kaduna State House of Assembly has approved a proposed constitutional amendment to pave the way for the establishment of state police in Nigeria.

The bill was approved during Thursday’s plenary presided over by Deputy Speaker Henry Magaji Dajuma, following its transmission to the state legislature by the National Assembly for concurrence.

The Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Henry Marah, said the proposed system would strengthen community security, improve responses to crimes, and protect lives and property.

Marah said state police would also help tackle banditry and kidnapping, create jobs for young people, and enable state governments to hold security personnel accountable.

He added that the state would prioritize funding for the proposed service, even if it required reducing spending on other projects.

The lawmaker expressed hope that improved security would allow farmers to return to their farms without fear of being kidnapped.

In a separate development, Marah disclosed that the Assembly was considering an amendment to the Kaduna State Library Board Law to convert public libraries into electronic libraries and information and communication technology centers.

The proposed centres would provide free internet access and help students register for examinations conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board and the West African Examinations Council.

He also said lawmakers were considering a bill to establish the Kaduna State Local Government Service Commission.
