FIFA President Gianni Infantino has pledged the world football governing body’s support for Nigeria’s efforts to reform and develop football.
Infantino made the commitment after meeting a Nigerian delegation led by National Sports Commission (NSC) Chairman Shehu Dikko at FIFA House in Zurich, Switzerland, on Tuesday.
The meeting focused on football governance, institutional reforms, development, and ways to create stronger structures and more opportunities for young players.
“We explored areas where FIFA can further support the growth of our beautiful game in this football-passionate country,” Infantino said in a post on FIFA’s X account.
The meeting came days after former Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi, and members of the federation’s Executive Committee resigned.
FIFA has since accepted the resignations and agreed to continue discussions with the Nigerian government, NFF, and Confederation of African Football (CAF) on a roadmap for comprehensive reforms.
Infantino also wished Nigeria’s Falconets and Flamingos success at their upcoming FIFA U-20 and U-17 Women’s World Cups.
Meanwhile, the NFF dismissed as fake a purported FIFA letter seeking clarification over the circumstances surrounding the mass resignations.
